Why Use Short Cords

Have you ever stepped into the server room at your business? I’m sure it looks a little something like spaghetti – which can actually be a lot messier than dinner. If you’re wondering how to prevent this mess, I’m here to help!

When it comes to cable management, you should do exactly that; manage your cables. Which is WHY YOU SHOULD USE SHORT CORDS. Color coding helps too!

Short power cords are very useful because if the cable lengths are reduced to a minimum, you can stack equipment and patch panels easier without creating cable havoc.

Design your data center in a way to keep your networking running cool, as well as the server racks. You may think only the servers (racks, U’s or units, or shelves) need to be cool. What you didn’t think about is that cables can get warm too. Using short cords increases the airflow and clears the exhaust space. If you have a massive amount of cables that are also six feet in length, it not only causes more clutter but it also decreases the airflow to the cords and causes heat to surround the cables. Another helpful tool, is color coding! Color code your cords to the servers. It is definitely the most efficient way to stay more organized.

Here at Quail, we offer multiple configurations in vibrant red, green, blue and purple colored cords such as,

c14 to c13
c14 to c19 c20 to c13 c20 to c19

When servers in a rack are inches or a foot from each other, there is no need for a standard 6 ft. or 8 ft. cord. It’s inefficient, you’ll have to coil up the cords and strap them with Velcro, and you invite tangles, clutter, and confusion. Quail provides various shorter cord lengths for the standard jumpers as well, such as,

6 - 11 in 12 - 23 in
24 - 35 in 36 and up in

How’s that saying go again? “Big things come in small packages.” You can better results with shorter cords. You decrease the risk of having cords drag onto the floor which can result into tripping in all that mess!

Now go clean up your spaghetti-filled server room before someone gets hurt!
