Ahh, the holidays. A time for celebrating the important things in life with the people we cherish the most. Even if that means traveling far and wide, we do so without question, because we know that’s what really matters. Often, this even involves international travel. And low and behold there will be some planning involved, especially if you plan to capture memories and maybe take care of some business on the side by bringing your electronics and accessories. For the uninitiated, or those with limited experience, we’ve come up with a handy step by step guide to making sure you have an (electronically) seamless holiday, and more time to spend with your loved ones.
- Determine the standard voltage for your trip: In the US, our electrical system is based on 110 volts, whereas 220 volts is the norm abroad. Ideally, what you want to look for are devices that use power cords with a universal rating. For instance, a laptop power cord that reads 110/220 V. If one of your gadgets uses only a 110 volts, such as a hair dryer, then you’ll want to look at a purchasing a converter so that everything works properly.
- Research exactly what type of plug your destination country uses. For example, are you going to China? They use a “GB 15934-2008 CHINA” style plug. How about France, Germany, or Belgium? You’ll need an adapter for a “CEE 7/7 EUROPEAN SCHUKO”. If in doubt, consult this handy list: http://www.quail.com/IntCordLocator.aspx.
- Next, take an inventory of your electronics. Are you bringing along a laptop? iPad?, DSLR? Bluetooth Radio? You’ll want to make sure that the adapter or power cord you choose will be compatible with your electronic device.
- Locate an adapter that can work with your electronics. If you’re lucky, you might be able use the same adapter for all your electronics. Check out our selection of Universal Adapters.
- Pack your bags and bon voyage! It’s important to safely pack and protect your valuables. There are several options for wrapping your electronics in plush material, and cases by Domke will protect with care.
